Round 2

Tuesday night we did a "rooming in" stay with Robbie. This is an opportunity for the parents to stay at the hospital overnight, with their baby, before the baby is discharged from the NICU the following day. It was a long night. Robbie cried all night except for when he was being held. The next 48 hours were all a blur, pretty much a repeat of what we experienced during our rooming in night and he had a fever. We had a scheduled pediatrician appointment on Friday and, after running a few tests, we got the news that Robbie was fighting an infection and he needed to go back to the NICU asap.

Long story short, Robbie had septic arthritis in his leg due to a staph infection he got while at the hospital. He had emergency surgery on Sunday night to drain out the fluid. We will never know what caused the infection (surgery, chest tube, IVs, ventilator...the list goes on) and we will never know how long he had it. These two questions will probably eat at me for the rest of my life.

So, Robbie is on his way to recovery again. The inflammation in Robbie's leg seems to be going down. The surgeon will continue to keep an eye on it for the next several weeks. The infection is still in his bloodstream so we're praying that the blood culture (that was drawn on Friday) will come back soon so the doctors will know exactly what antibiotic is needed to kill off his staph infection for good. It's basically a waiting game.

I took a few pictures from our rooming in night and drive home but, to be honest, it's hard to look at them because of everything that's happen since then. I can't wait for our little boy to get healthy again. We did take a video the day after his surgery. This was before one of his feedings...you can see how happy he is now. No more pain in his leg!!
